Tempted by Her Outcast Viking

A Shieldmaiden Sisters story

Lucy Morris

Historical Romance / Viking Romance

Tempted by Her Outcast Viking is the second book in the Shieldmaiden Sisters trilogy. I reviewed the first one, The Viking She Would Have Married, recently – a highly enjoyable romantic adventure. Find it here.

Tempted by Her Outcast Viking continues straight after the end of the first novel.

After Valda and Halfdan have left York, Valda's sister, Brynhild, is aware of her increased responsibility towards her independent mother, Porrunn, and her younger sister, Helga. Their situation is still precarious, but with enough silver to buy the farm Porrunn has been dreaming of, their future seems secure.

The thorn in Brynhild's side is Halfdan's half-brother, Erik, whose freedom from their overbearing father Halfdan recently bought. Erik is tasked to help the women find the right place, but a past experience has taught her not to trust the brooding half-Persian warrior.

Erik, on the other hand, has worries of his own. Finally a free man, he feels lost, bereft of a task. He realises that he wants a family, a wife and children, something his own uncaring father never provided. But where would he find a willing wife?

Whilst Brynhild and Erik bicker on the way back home from the market, young Helga is abducted. A search reveals no trace of her. Reluctantly, Brynhild accepts Erik's help with their investigation into who has taken her.

Soon they find a clue that leads them into the inhospitable hills of Gwynedd – and a situation neither of them expected!

Tempted by her Outcast Viking is not a gentle romance. It's a strong story, with flawed characters who have to overcome ingrained perceptions of themselves. Both Brynhild and Erik cling to feelings of rejection, of loneliness, to survive in a cruel world. They have to work hard at trusting each other to move forward.

I visualised Brynhild as a blonde Xena – a feisty female warrior, too intimidating for many men. But behind her abrupt mannerisms lies an insecure young woman with fears of being abandoned.

As for Erik, there were some aspects I didn't find realistic, but everything worked well within the plot.

Some readers may find the ending ’unfinished’, but it leads us straight into Helga's story. Prepare for a clever twist! But rest assured that Brynhild and Erik, by that point, have decided on their fate.

Tempted by her Outcast Viking is a fast-paced, riveting romance adventure!

Now, I'm very much looking forward to reading Helga's story.
