Review:
After a recent break-up, historian Kate is relieved to move into a country house she has inherited from her late godmother – in Cornwall! Finally, she has found peace and quiet to get over her heartache, and start afresh.
Or so she thought!
But after her arrival, a strange sense of 'something else' settles over the place, of past events that seem to haunt her new home.
Things happen within that should – reasonably – not, and Kate is left with a task to unravel what happened here. As she delves into letters and unearths hidden memories, she begins to piece together the drama of the past.
Help arrives unexpectedly in the handsome shape of her new neighbour, Tom – and his friendly dog isn't the only reason Kate feels drawn to him. But Tom has secrets of his own, which he is most reluctant to share.
Will Kate and Tom find happiness, despite unearthing the dark events of the past? Or will history repeat itself?
The Unquiet Spirit is a beautifully atmospheric story of love, revenge, and long-buried family secrets. The ghostly shenanigans give you goosebumps, and the subtly increasing tension has you holding your breath – especially if you're reading this in the dark of night!
The author knows the locations featured in the novel very well, as she takes us to the dramatic Cornwall coast. Her love for the setting shines through and, as a reader, you gain a real sense of 'being there'. It makes you want to explore further, though perhaps without added ghosts...
Kate and Tom are very much 21st-century, no-nonsense characters, but as they grapple with the intrigues of the past catching up with them, they both learn to adapt their views.
Their budding romance is gentle, and the scars from past relationships, that they carry within themselves, make for realistic reading. They don't fall over each other, but as events progress, their trust towards each other grows steadily.
As for the resident ghost, a subtle paranormal thread runs through the novel, that reveals a past of love and heartache. The ghostly scenes are compelling, giving you goosebumps, as the past is uncovered bit by bit.
A highly recommended read.

Blurb:
She wasn’t home alone...
With her love life in tatters, Kate Wilson needs a fresh start, and where could be better than the old Cornish house that had belonged to her godmother?
There’s just one problem – it comes with a ghost as a sitting tenant.
Her grumpy new neighbour, the broodingly handsome Tom Carbis, is another fly in the ointment – he seems to turn up wherever Kate goes. His dog might be friendly, but he’s definitely not.
Then the discovery of a hidden diary points Kate to a romantic mystery with links to both Tom’s family and her house’s past – a mystery that might explain the reason for her spectral lodger.
The downside? Kate needs Tom’s help to solve it and has to convince him that she is not his foe.
But working with Tom to unravel long-buried secrets has unexpected consequences, and Kate discovers far more than she bargained for.
The Unquiet Spirit is a spooky, suspense-filled, enemies-to-lovers romance.

About the Author:
Penny Hampson writes mysteries, and because she has a passion for history, you’ll find her stories also reflect that.
A Gentleman’s Promise, a traditional Regency romance, was Penny’s debut novel and the first of her Gentlemen Series. There are now four novels in the series, with the latest, An Adventurer’s Contract, released in November 2024. Penny also enjoys writing contemporary mysteries with a hint of the paranormal, because where do ghosts come from but the past?
The Unquiet Spirit, a spooky mystery/romance set in Cornwall, is the first in the Spirited Encounters Series. Look out for A Plethora of Phantoms coming soon.
Penny lives with her family in Oxfordshire, and when she is not writing, she enjoys reading, walking, swimming, and the odd gin and tonic (not all at the same time).
