Turning the World to Stone

The Life of Caterina Sforza
Part One: 1472 to 1488

Snippet:

“My lady, I’m sorry to interrupt you.” Bossi hurried into the library, a harassed look on his face and sweat dripping from his forehead.

“Gian, come in.” Caterina poured a cup of wine and handed it to him. “Sit. What’s happened?”

Bossi drained the cup in one gulp but stayed standing. Taking a deep breath, he spoke, his words hurried. “There was a plot to kill Lorenzo and his brother, Giuliano, Medici. Giuliano has been murdered, stabbed nineteen times, at the Duomo in Florence.”

Caterina and Luisa both covered their mouths in horror as Bossi took another lungful of air. Caterina finally spoke. “And Lorenzo?”

“He managed to flee to the sacristy with minor wounds.”

“I can see why you were so disturbed when you arrived.” Caterina looked at the man sympathetically. “And their poor wives,” she muttered.

“Madonna, there is more.”

“What? Tell me.”

Gian now hesitated, and it was the first time in Caterina’s life she’d ever seen the man nervous. “It’s your husband, my lady. He has been implicated in the murder.”

Blurb:

Vilified by history, Caterina Sforza learned early that her life was not her own. Married at age ten, she was a pawn in the ever-changing political environment of Renaissance Italy.

Resigned to her life as a fifteenth-century wife, Caterina adapted to the role she was expected to play: raising and educating her children, helping the poor in her new home, and turning a blind eye to her husband’s increasingly shameful behaviour. But Fate had other plans for her, and soon Caterina’s path would be plagued by murder, betrayal, and heartbreak.

“Could I write all, the world would turn to stone.”
